On the whole I'd say 'well played' against a page 1 player. Nice to see that you took the initiative with the bishop sac and at least gave yourself a chance of counterplay against his king rather than be slowly crushed without a fight.
Thanks folks, i've heard of fritz, but am not really sure what I should be buying for a decent chess database/analyis app and what exactly it'd do for me.
Yeah, Yozzer didn't really have much to gain from playing me I guess and I blundered into a pawn fork really early as black... a wasted opportunity there.
Hollow here is in short what I think of your game:
Up to move 14th you did pretty well (you could have played better but you did not do any mess ups). But 14.Bg5?! is at best a dubious move.It accomplishes little since the queen is no longer at d8, and Bxf6 is not favorable for White.
I would have probably prefered 14.Qe2!? supporting the knight at e5 (White's main asset and pride) or the 14.h3 just to insure that there is no Ng4 in the future and in case the knight is chased from e5, Black cannot win the pawn at h2.
Other then that there was not much you could have done after 17...Bb4, whatever you play Black would comes at least a piece ahead.
Thanks ilywrin, I see your point, I think that at the time I was not so much trying for a real threat on the queen but to try to exchange for a doubled porn. Obviously this looks a bit ludicrous in retrospect...
I think that i'd have probably been too cowardly to put my queen towards the front of a battle for a contentious square... hmmm.
Well, firstly I didn't get that far because Yozzer had several other fish to fry that took my attention elsewhere, if he hadn't he could have easily just shifted the knight. If i'd have achieved it, then my Knight is attacked by the pawn and the diagonal from C7 to H1 starts to look really hazardous.
At least, that's what i'm thinking at the moment...
