Tips on how to retain lines in openings?

First off, don't do a set game, you must play those 5-8 moves in order start remembering them. 3 whites and 3 blacks is just enough to give you an idea if you want to learn the opening. I just mean that they actually might not like the opening right away, who knows - maybe I didn't even like the KG the first time I played it!
