Pick up this no more than an 1 hour ago from a Flea Pit for 50p
It was still wrapped up in it's original cellophane.
The Chess Club by Jan Van Haasteren (born 1936).
( A rare artist who has the board round the correct way in his work - most do not).
Quite brilliant and you see something new every time you look at it.
(I thought the man slamming the table was missing a pawn but I've
just noticed it in someone else's drink.)
It must be fairly recent as he has a lad receiving moves from a chappie
sitting near by who is using a computer.
The artist's 'trademark' is a shark's fin which appears on all his work.
I found that but cannot figure out, why the ghost?

Nice picture. Reminds me of the Aberdeen congress with all them sheep:-)
This thread got me looking at some old corners. Hours of good chess reading there. I particularly like this one http://www.chessedinburgh.co.uk/chandlerarticle.php?ChandID=226 . The underpromotion game was great. White must be a very strong and handsome Grandmaster:-)
Hey GP- I started to use the picture as my "desktop" on my laptop, but then decided I liked your "Chandler Cornered" picture better (the one with the guy hiding behind the trash can with the shadows of pieces). Subconsciously, I think it makes me sharper.
Wishful thinking, really, but I'll try anything!
Hi Paul
The guy is meant to be me and is an original Gerard Oswald drawing.
Because of my fixation with junk shops the chess gang think I rake dustbins.
I caught Gerard (then unemployed) doodling on beer mats in Sandy Bells.
I asked him to do some chess stuff and put them on the Corner.
Gary Lane contacted him through me to illustrate some of his books.
Other offers came in and Gerard now pulls in a comfortable living
from his art. The power oif the Corner.
(I'm now unemployed and doodling on beer mats) 😉
