In my reviews, I came across an old favorite, The Two Knights Defence By Estrin.
I mentioned what a great book it is and how you can learn tactics (and improve) just from playing through some of the variations.
They really are a joy to play through.
In another thread, Greenpawn noted his love of the book too.
Thread 103229
He included the following beautiful game (from an earlier edition).
This inspired me to go on and order the older edition (which I received in the mail today).
I hope he won't be offended, but I will reprint the game here.
Sokolov - Ruzhnikov Corres. 1965/66
In my next thread(s), I will give some other beautiful variations from this exciting opening.
I started to read the older edition from page 1. I hope to stick with it and go through every variation in the book. I had quite a fun time looking at the fried liver. 🙂
Here is one of Estrin's own games.
He says white won quickly. I had a nice time playing this one out as well. The win isn't so obvious. In fact, I am only guessing if my continuation is right. I will check over this again tomorrow, when I am not so tired.
Anyway, this game and the other variations leading up to it were fun to play through.
I suggest you all play through the Two Knights for tactics practice/enjoyment.
I have one more game in mind that I will post in a second.
I remembered going over a long forgotten variation years ago with a friend. Conveniently having a Two Knights book in my hand, I decided to skip ahead and look that variation up.
I found this wonderful game, along with the variation.
8. ... Kf8 is not the main line, and in fact quite rare.
I believe it leads to equality in the revised edition of this book.
The real howler is 13. ... Ne5. From that point on, black's king's weaknesses are exploited to perfection. The ending mate is quite beautiful.
Also, after 9. ... Qd7 10.Bh6! gxh6 11.Qd2 is quite cute. 🙂

Great games.
"I hope he won't be offended...."
Why should I be offended - that game should be on every thread.
A wee word of warning though. Estrin's analysis, especially in the
first book, can be a bit dodgy. I'm off to bed now, perhaps show
a bust or two another time.
