I just got challenged by a player named 'unbeaten' who says his rating is '1900' (I noticed no mention of 1900 FIDE, ELO, or what) ... am I wrong to make the assumption that this person might not be legitimate, or am I being paranoid? If I just 'delete' the game, it's like it never occured, correct?

That is right, you can delete the game and it will not affect your rating. What is this players rating out of interest? If it is already 200+ point higher than you then you might as well play them as you'll only loose a few points and probably learn something 😉

They are still 1200p without the first 5 games finished yet - although they have already won 2, and lost none.

Fair enouph, when i started here i drew with dscp (now 2000+ rated), only problem was that at the time he had just started here so i lost rating 🙁 (That is, as they say, how the cookie raises your chalestorol 😉)

Um, why the facts that the username of the challenger is Unbeaten and he/she claims to have a 1900 rating make the original poster think the challenger is 'not legitimate'? Is there something I don't know or did I just miss something?

Yes,in chess there's no such thing as a 1900 rating! 😉 😛

PS: For the record,I'm just kidding,I don't get it either.

My countrymen causing trouble again?? No lol

1900 is would either be his South African Chess Federation ( CHESSA ) rating which is roughly equivalent to ELO / FIDE or his British Chess federation rating converted to ELO / FIDE ( FIDE / ELO = (BCF x 8) + 600 ).

It happens. :-) I just got challenged by a player whose rating was some 9 hundred or so, who played several hundred points above his rating by my rather rough estimate. Upon inquiry, turns out he had a bunch of timeouts... 🙄

fortunately, I still won, but only because I was playing the albin, and I rather suspect he was unbooked...

I don't see anything wrong with putting ratings in your profile - it makes the guy more legitimate surely, as you know roughly the level of your opponent? You don't have to accept, after all!

The thought that was crossing my mind was as follows: This guy cheats with a computer. It was just the idea of the name 'unbeaten' along with a high-sounding number. In the past, on other sites, either via correspondence chess or live play, whenever somebody like that has come along, 10-1 they are a cheater (or, at least, that has been my experience). I'm just new to this site, and didn't know what would happen if I clicked on delete. =)
