The problem causing it to be so underpopulated is because many people don't really know that it even exists. So join today and make this great server even better than it already is. There was a recent USCL World Championships on December 31, in which the winner was awarded 75 dollars, the winner under 2000 awarded 25 dollars, and the winner under 1800 awarded 25 dollars. Many events will follow this one and with everyone's help, the awards may even go up and save you the time to go to a real otb chess tournament to win the extra money you want.
I agree, it's very nice. The interface is particularly well done. The only problem is that there aren't even a quarter as many players as on FICS and that you need a subscription for ratings. I hope that there will be more people there as online chess grows in popularity.
Originally posted by glggThanks for the blatant advertisement. Any possible inclination I had for using USCL has been extinguished. I'll stick to playchess.com thanks.

Sadly, the USCF still needs to clean its house. Now that they are beyond imminent bankruptcy, perhaps they can begin to evaluate some of their enterprises. Their online chess server must do more to attract players before it will become worth the price of membership. FICS has no fee and has many more players, as well as a range of interface choices (I use BabasChess). ICC has the most activity, the strongest players, and excellent training features. It is worth the price of membership. The Fritz and family interface is better than USCL, its playchess server has plenty of activity, and coverage of master events excells (only ICC comes close). USCL simply is not competitive against these three.

(I play 1-2 games per week n USCL. It's good enough for that.)

I used to play on Chesslive. It took the longest to find a game and my rating was highest (indicating strength of membership). I now play on ICC, Playchess.com, and FICS. I have the lowest rating on FICS, again indicating strength of membership. I use the Babas interface which is as good as it gets and its free. ICC is the most popular, easiest and fastest finding a game. At Playchess.com you get a more international clientel, a lot of Germans. I play it mainly in the daytime when the Europeans are home from work. At night the membership diminshes to retired people and drug smugglers.
I just checked the latest Chess Life magazine. Not one mention of Chesslive. It's as if it doesn't exist. For Chesslive to be a viable enterprise it must work hand in hand with USCF with publicity, pro simuls and lectures, major tournament coverage, etc. Only then can it hope to even reach the popularity of ICC, FICS, and Playchess.com.
Originally posted by buddy2USCL has no chance of reaching the popularity of the big guns. They used to have more high-rated competition until they drove them away by stiffing them on their prizes won in cash prize tourneys. Before this colossal screwup, I (and others!) had the honor of playing games against several GM's and IM's. After that, there was only one FM that maintained a regular presence there.

This is only one example of USCL shooting itself in the foot (or higher up). They are a failed server and they deserve to dwindle into obscurity.
As for USCF, they had monthly prize tourneys going at ICC, but the agreement unfortunately fell through over time. USCF does not seem consistent enough to be a player in promoting online chess.
