Do you guys feel it is unethical to use an opening book in your games? I was just excoriated by an opponent after informing him of doing just that. I did not know people felt this way. Does anyone else have any similar experiences?

The unedited post was more fun!😀

Believe it or not, I actually met the guy in person. He was ahead of me at the grocery store, in the "10 items or less, cash only line", only he had a basket full of stuff, and wrote a check. The he got in his double parked car, left his basket in the lot, drove 10 mph under the speed limit in the left lane, never touched his turn signal. He got home, took the warrant for back child support off his front door, threw it in his yard, and went in his house.

The only reason he made it to this site was because he was surfing for porn, and typed in "chess" instead of "chest".

Pity the poor guy, and send him on his way!

I think he only found this site from typing "redhotpoon"

either way, opening dbs/books are 100% fine. tell him to not be such a poor sport and just play chess.

Use your books! It's not unethical, nor is it against the rules.😏

not only should you use your opening book databases, you should be looking at any relevant games for middle game ideas and typical endings.

Don't tell him. He should assume that you are unless you tell him otherwise.

Yeah, there will always be n00bs who don't realize that this has long been accepted in correspondence chess.

Thanks for the responses. I was under the assumption that it was a common practice, and this confirms it.

I was recently told that the technicality in 3.b. (http://www.redhotpawn.com/myhome/termsofservice.php) was meant only for players rated much higher than I.
