I don't really know much about the Vienna Game, but maybe I'll give it a shot too. How does play generally continue in the Vienna Gambit if black accepts the pawn? (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 exf4 4. e5 Ng8....)
leading to a very favourable line of the KG
all experts prefer 3. ..d5!

Here's my game with King of Smooth, who put people on his ignore list when they beat him.
Originally posted by badivan1There are both extremely quiet and very wild lines in the Vienna depending on the two players' choices. An example of a quiet line is 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.g3 Nc6 4.Bg2 Bc5 while 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4 exf4 4.Nf3 g5 5.d4 g4 6.Bc4 gxf3 is clearly a pretty hairy gambit line.
Hey, guys! I was wondering what is your opinion regarding this unpretentious opening, the Vienna Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nc3), whether you play it or not.
Originally posted by AThousandYoungI play it aggressively. And man it's been making some games nearly as fun as the fried liver attack!
Not aggressive I guess...
Typically
1 e4 e5
2 Nc3 Nc6
3 f4 exf4
4 d4
has been good for me as white. ...Qh4!? i think is overrated as 5 Ke2 is enogh to stop black's undeveloped pinch.
Better for black is
2 ... Nf6
3 f4 d5! (good freeing move)
4 d3 ef!? (leads to interesting complications, in which often black disrupts white's king, but it allows white further developement anyways)
i.e.
5 e5 d4
6 Ne2 Nd5
7 Bxf4 Nxf4
8 Nxf4 Bb4+
9 Kf2 etc
The better tactician usually wins these games, although in OTB the gambits probably work well for white if he knows them.
