Does anyone know of a site where I can view a board position with a 3D board? I mean one with actual perspective, not just 3D pieces on a flat board. And yes, I am the guy who's too cheap and lazy to find and buy chess software which would probably have 3D viewing! (Maybe this Christmas....) I only want to view a position for analysis (and to simulate OTB), nothing else (rotating board, engine, etc.). Thank you.

Should this be in the "Help" forum? Feel free to move it, admins.

I guess it would be too much trouble for you to just set up an old-fashioned, real chess board next to your PC?

It would be some trouble, since I use RHP in different locations. I also only own a small travel set and an ornate non-Staunton set. Plus, it would be nice to view one game's position, then another, then another, without setting up a board each time.

I figured that was probably the case. I'm not aware of anything that fits the bill exactly, but if I see something, I'll post it.

I found a database program that might work for you, although you'd have to install the program on your PC instead of just using some small online application. (It's not a small program.) I'm not sure this is what you were looking for, but it's the best free 3D application that I found.

It's the Jose 1.4.4 database program. It has pretty good 3D effects. You can zoom the board in or out, flip the board, and tilt the board. (The 3D controls don't seem intuitive to me. Use the Help files!) However, the program always seems to start in 2D, and I have to switch to 3D every time I start Jose. I'm not sure if there's some permanent 3D setting that I've missed.

You can paste FEN positions and PGN files from the Windows clipboard into Jose and then look at the positions on the 3D board. To paste a FEN, you can just go to the Game menu and select the Setup Position submenu. However, pasting in a PGN file is a little less intuitive. To paste a PGN file, you first have to open the Database Window, open a new file, then right-click in the game panel. THEN, you can select "Paste PGN". (Again, use the Help files!)

Jose also requires that Sun Java Runtime Environment is installed on your PC. If it's not, you can choose a larger install package that also installs the Sun JRE files.

Outstanding! Thanks for the suggestions. I will check out the Jose application. I also will check the cheaper chess software.
