Been a bit longer than usual since my last blog as I promised I would have
the Aitken games (I’ve entered over 1,700) finished by the end of September.
Viz (a UK publication noted for it dicey adult only humour) has recently
done a five page spread on chess no doubt prompted by Nona Gaprindashvili
and her up an coming lawsuit v Netflix and ‘The Queens Gambit’ series which
was news worthy enough to make all the main papers including BBC News at Ten.
I’ve given the cover as it chess themed (It’s OK Russ there are no sweary words.)
Inside they mention a spoof Spassky drawn game about a Bishop taking pawns, a Rook
and putting a King in check. I found an RHP game that does all that in seven moves.
Next I highlight the fact that Richard Rapport set an opening trap older than
God’s dog (The Mortimer) against Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen dodged it but of
course I furnish examples of RHP members falling for it and the counter trap
Then me! walking into the Siberian Trap (not as old as God’s dog but close.)
I actually managed to win that game (a torrid win on time ). I found an RHP
game where they same thing happened, though thankfully not as awful as my win.
