How do you guys feel about players who SEEM to be "padding" their rating against lower rated players???? Just curious? My wife is a beginner (950ish), and I am a patzer at best. LOL She was just challenged by a 1350+ player who promptly began to try and Scholar's mate her. Seemed bad taste to me. I had her trash the game. She knows the Scholar's mate, I just thought it was kind of poor taste. I checked out the fellows current games. All but one of them are against players whose ratings are in the 1100-1150 range. Any comments?

Playing folks lower rated usually doesn`t help one to gain more rating points since one needs to virtuallyish win every game to avoid losing rating points.
One booboo and poof you just lost one game and now need to beat lower rated players like a zillion times to get your rating points back.
I predict you are kinda reading into it something that wasn`t intended.
For example GM Hikaru Nakamura played a super early Qh5 vs a GM
and i wouldn`t consider that move anything but normal myself.
I more or less am reminded by the should one resign chat that is popular.
I think it is a psychological situation predminantly and not a chess one.
🙂
I'm in a loss/loss situation for playing again.
If I win I'm a vulture.
If I lose I'm sandbagging.
I going up 1pt at a time and on the whole enjoying all the games.
I'm taking a few chances and am there for the taking.
In one game I set myself up to sac my Queen for 3 bits.
It's OK this positon has gone and will not be seen again.
1.Bc4+ Kh8 to undefend the f8 Rook and then take on f6.
When the critical moment came I was not too happy and thought
I had miscalculated by NOT getting 3 bits.
I then realised I get the three pieces alright, the trouble is I had
saccced piece earlier on - that's why I kept seeing an extra piece
for him. 🙂
I don't mind giving the site lemon or two after all the enjoyment
I get laughing at players mistakes.
This is where the fun is Heinz come on and join in.
Take risk or two - who cares if you drop 30 odd grading points.
I mean who really cares? Is it blood?
No comments about that game, it's still GIP.

Well, the only way to learn how to protect against Scholar's Mate is to be exposed to it. You don't have to protect your wife, she can handle her own games, she is a grown up.
There are many traps in openings. You learn one by one by falling in to them.

Why? Because this is a game (first point) and second point, the rating system is designed to be fair however players match up.
In the example you give, the 1350+ rated opponent will get precious few rating points for beating your wife, and were she to beat him, he would suffer a cataclismic loss of rating points.
I don't know Greenpawn from Adam, but if he wants to try and gain 50-100 rating points by playing much lower rated opposition, he only needs to trip up once every 32 games to lose ALL the points he secured. So it is a high risk strategy.
I'm normally pleased when white tries for Scholar's mate as it means I get to teach them a lesson in queen safety. This is not a game you want to cancel.
I play some totally rubbish openings, there is almost no opening so bad for white it's actually losing and knowing that an opening is bad isn't the same as being able to take advantage of it (Game 6687894, I played 1. f3 and my opponent tried to checkmate me, which isn't quite the right thing to do).
Hi
I'm not really snorting grading points. Heinz dragged me into thread
as a joke (I'll get him back).
I just wanted to play some fun games try a few things and have a
work out.
Think I've made it very clear I don't give a jack about grading points.
(if I did I would have gone unrated). they do not matter on here.
They mean nothing at all.
Infact I was trying to get a squad together for a:
'Let's Make Someone Happy' Scam.
We all join a tournament and throw our games v the lowest graded
player just to see his graph peak and then drop again.
my exact words were:
"Then of course his grade will fall so his graph will have this permanent
'mountain' for us to look and laugh at in the years ahead when we get bored."
It was explained we would all get banned so the idea was put
back on the shelf.
Hardly the action of a grade consuious shark.
Remember I put myself up for the challenge, I did not challenge these
guys. They knew what they were getting into.
And after the games they want to play me again.
So no harm done there.

"...you are the only strong player I felt I had a chance against."
I'm not too sure if that was a compliment but I thought to myself.
"That's because you don't get a chance v a box and most of...." 😉
And anyway I pay my way sub - surely I can play who I want. 😏
