In Kramnik vs Deep Fritz the Fritz team did not appear to go for the jugular like in Hydra vs Adams and so they ran Deep Fritz on a laptop and even gave him a copy of Fritz to practice with. In the previous drawn match he had discovered Fritz did not treat certain positions well and so adopted a strategy on that/
In the engine room of playchess people turn up with machines with up to 64 threads, and that is their hobby. The result could have been quite different if Kramnik turned up without having practised against Fritz and if the Fritz camp brought in serious hardware.
for giving a copy to kramnik, I think it's a part of their agreement, and I think it's reasonable, proved by the fact that Fritz won the game convincingly.
Kramnik demanded so many advantages, also one of which is beeing able to see the analysis lines of Fritz as long as it was in the book.
by the way, as I recall, the laptop was just in the function of a screen for the person who makes the moves on an actual board. the hardware was huge and was in a seperate and protected room, connected to the laptop with special cables. but as I said, I'm not sure.
If Kramnik played Hydra without any concessions he would not have done better than Adams. Adams was not only mugged on the board, he was only paid for results achieved so he only went home with a few bob whilst Kramnik had a cool half a mill regardless of the result.

It's not a regular engine, it's a project, a machine designed to play chess in particular. so it naturally has an enormous hardware, it's itself a hardware. Fritz is just an engine, so I wouldn't expect such hardware from any fritz-human match. and about the money, kramnik was WC at the moment, besides, fritz has chessbase, chessbase almost "has" FIDE, and hydra has nothing but an adventurous scientist. (again, I'm not disagreeing 🙂 )

As i posted a link on the experiences of a GM in South Africa in another thread Thread 71688, not all GMs can demand millions like Kramnik as appearance fees and limousines/fancy hotels. Kramnik had better enjoy it while he can.
