this position occured in an OTB game of mine. My opponent lost on time, but I am still curious if the attack would have won.
I am white, and I had offered the "free" bishop on g5 after he played h6 and I had played h4 (opening the file)
My previous move was Nxg7. Obviously Kxg7 results in Qh7#....where as moving his King (in retreat) drops atleast the queen....
so was my bishop/knight sac valid?

EDIT: The knight was on h5, so if anyone wants to say if sacin on f6 might have been better go ahead!

it would be a lot easier to understand if you just posted the notation of the game if you have it.

let me try to find it....

I think obviously at least Nxg7 is good, since it gives him a choice between mate and dropping heavy material! Without the actual moves, I don't think anyone can analyze the bishop sac

wow that requires some serious guts, and I didn't analyze it, but on the first glance it looks nice to me.

If you had played g6 instead of Nxg7 I don't see how he could've stopped mate or a huge material loss, but your ways works too.. Also, on move 5, it might've been better to play 5. e5 h6 6.Bxh6 Rxh6 e7.exf6. This is definitely unclear, but I Think white is better.

Im going to assume your line actually means
5. e5 h6 6.Bxh6 Rxh6 7.exf6 Qxf6

if so, then your idea definantly looks interesting, though it seems to encourage a violent developement on the kingside (R on an open file, Q on the king side), it appears that we end up equal, but mine seems softer

thanks...it wasnt a serious game, and I just knew that with the open file I should be good to go. In all honesty, I missed him playing Ne4, blocking my bishop and making problems. I think there are a couple fun moves I could have done...but what can I say...time trouble makes the worst out of us

The one drawback to Nf4 is that your Qside got fractured. Luckily, he couldn't take on c3 with the Q due to Bh7+.

Ideally, Black would like to play ...Qa3+ and Nb6-a4 to generate some threats, but obviously he can't do that with Bxf6 in the air. I'm not sure he can do anything that is fast enough to distract White from his build-up on the Kside.

thanks, I wasn't very happy about his queenside prospects after Nf4, but I didn't think he could get there fast enough...thanks for the feedback, it was definantly one of my favorite games

Nice game.I do wonder about 16.Qxe4,since it loses time and you're not exactly playing for pawns here. Why not 16.Qh3 wasting no time on the attack. What had you planned in the event of 16...,f5?

I think you are right....Qxe4 might have been bad!! cause f5 seems to cause problems there. Qh3 seems to side step it all...that probably would have been best

ballsy, but it seemed pretty natural
