What are Pawns, are they men or woman

My niece, about three at the time, seeing me playing Fritz (with piece design similar to the 'newspaper' set on rhp), apart from the obvious horsey, came up with the names butterfly for the king, party hat for the queen, and lady for the pawns ... so they're female
