Why not just stick with 1.d4 e6? It will often be answered with 2.e4, and you're right back where you wanted to be against the e4 players.

yeah, that does happen more often than i think it should when i respond 1.d4 e6. tempting.

i'm thinking about learning the slav, since it "works" against 1.d4 and 1.c4.

The KID is my defence of choice against d4, but I've been dabbling in the QGD lately hoping for the opportunity to get a Tartakover.

If you play c6 against 1.c4, your opponent could transpose into a Caro-Kann variation on move 2 with 2.e4. 🙂

yes, but the Caro-Kann is only the greaqtest thing ever, so why are you putting a negative spin on that scenario?

I was merely stating that your opponent could transpose, so you have to be booked up on both Slav and Caro-Kann theory to play c6 versus 1.c4.

For me, since I opened with 1.d4, I play 2.c4 in response to 1. ...e6, since I'm looking for a QP opening. Seems like 1. ...e6 gives white too many options for the game.
