1.e4 c6
2.d4 d5, I like
3.Nc3 dxe4
4.Nxe4 Bf5
5.Ng3 Bg6
6.h4! h6 (not h5?! because this lets white's knight go to g5 and if later black decides to play f6, white has Qg6+, then Nf7, then Nxh8 +/-)
7.Nf3 Nd7
8.h5 Bh7
9.Bd3 Bxd3
10.Qxd3 e6
Tournament 2620 doesn't include 10...e6 in the variation and Game 3884883 is an example of why not to play 6...h5?!.

h4 doesn't need ! because it's mainline...
there isn't a mainline that has an ! ever
h4 is not a new revelation to you and you alone...
sorry...
now, if you want to say that a3 is your move choice instead, and you have a reason, then by all means, place a self-glorifying !, but while quoting mainline, please refrain...
Originally posted by jvanhineI played a Caro-Kann against cludi in a Blitz game. He came at me with a Panov-Botvinnik Attack and completely took me to school. Of course, he's cludi and I'm not, but I mention this because I think it is a nice aggressive response to the Caro-Kann.
cludis website has a nice article on it, id check it out if i were you...

I have had some good caro kahn games lately with my new line, the panov-botvinnik attack.

Game 4005773 A nice solid build up on the queenside prompted a mistake.
Game 4005776 This would probably have been drawn if he didnt play Na5 which allowed me the extra tempo to win a pawn.
Game 3962714 A more of a tactical win, rarely seen against this very solid defence.
Game 4005786 Finally, a game utilising a bishop pair as well as a timely breaking open of the centre to grind out a long win. This position is not a true botvinnik attack but has similarities..

Why do you consider ! to be self glorifying?
I've often quoted lines and copied an ! from the text with the intention of making an accurate copy and no intention of being self glorifying.
It seems to be that you are saying the use of ! suggests the author of the text has "discovered" a novelty and considers it to be both new to theory and an excellent move. If this is the case then I would agree that it's a little self glorifying to use an ! on move 6 of a popular line...but I don't think it is.
I think a move that gets a ! should achieve something significant in the game, either being an attacking manouvre that places a piece on a strong square or wins material or a defensive manouvre that defends against an almost impossible looking threat or perhaps a move allowing a zugzwang which would force a winning position.
In any case, the presence of a ! should mark a turning point in the game in one sides favour.
After struggling to find an aggressive white line for many years I finally settled on the Panov attack as in Game 2983430 and Game 3598415 which seems to be working for me.
