I refuse to pay the cost of the latest software....so today i was in the classy "Target" department store....and i saw Fritz.

I know it was Fritz cause on the cover it advertised that you get 3 months of playchess.com for free.

Also it said on the cover...."Grandmaster challenge II"

So is this Fritz 2?

uhhhm..

I don't know for certain. However, I have seen that with Fritz proper you would have a full year of access to playchess.com....
I'm sure someone with your software will enlighten us further.

you have Fritz 7?
this guy says it's buggy, and he wants Fritz 9 (so this came before), and it tells him to insert the Fritz 7 CD.. so I guess you have 7 ?

Sorry, at that cut-rate price, you're not allowed to ask any questions. Just run the program, and don't forget to smile as you're using it. 😛

Seriously though, I checked the Viva-Media site. No info on which engine it uses. Maybe if you look in the engine folder after you install it, you might be able to tell which engine it is. Chessbase engines will have a file extension of eng.

I am very certain that is Fritz 7. It is still a strong tactical engine, but it is going to be missing pretty much everthing the more current versions know about positional play.

I got Fritz 7, it ain't "buggy". I've never heard that claimed about any version of Fritz. I doubt if fritz 9 would be noticeably stronger to anyone, I can't beat Fritz 7 at 5 seconds/move.

It probably does, but I can't say for sure. I gave my Fritz 8 away a long time ago.

I don't know what you are paying for your copy on eBay, but if it is a used copy then the code has probably already been used and subsequently you won't get your free year on playchess.com.

Fritz 8 is really cheap, and can be found 'new' on many web sites at a bargain basement price. The 'new' ones have the advantage of still having live registration codes.

Yes its a new copy. I am getting it for 200 Indian rupees which works out to about 6-7 USD.
Does anyone here run fritz 8 on vista?

I'm doubtful. I have fritz 9, which has "compatibility issues" with Windows Vista 😠

Which brings me to a question of my own: which chess programs DO work on vista?
