Everywhere I look and it seems to be the norm at international tournaments the pieces are white and rosewood which I hate, why no
black pieces,Fischer insisted on white/black for Spassky in 72 and I know why, those rosewood pieces are not a uniform colour (and there's swirls in them)and I find that really distracting...anyone else prefer black? or how come rosewood became the norm?

ya, bothers me too. Bought a lovely chess set there a while back, rosewood pieces look awful cos my existing board is jet black (and white of course)

I love rosewood, but I also hate the stark black/white square boards - too harsh on the eyes for my tastes. Rosewood goes well with the more 'natural' wooden color boards.

On the other hand, my tournament sets (with white and green squares) definitely have pure black pieces.

I like Rosewood alot better than Jet Black pieces. So much nicer looking to me.
