If you are about to checkmate, and you resign first, you've lost the game. If you make the move and release your hand, the game is over and you CANNOT resign. You cannot resign a finished game. Simple.
If this happened in a tourney, the TD would be called over. If the move was completed before the person said, "I resign" the ruling would be a win by checkmate. If you say "I resign" and then move, it's likely that the ruling would be twofold: one, you lose, second, they'd think you an idiot.
on playchess my opponent offered a draw after I checkmated him. Next time I'll accept the offer. If after a game is over the result can be other than what the board says I don't see why not you can checkmate and resign at the same time. I guess I'll soon find out. Although rules vary depending on where you go for example you cant resign until the game has started on playchess but you can on freechess.

Yes.... why on earth would you hand the game to your opponent as you put the finishing touches on beating them? Surely the purpose of any competitive game is to try and win... so if you're in a position to win, take it! Can't see why you'd even question handing the game over as you win.. Hmm?
