The french defence is a good response to e4 for players who prefer positional and semi-open games. Black develops into a very solid position at the cost of trapping his light bishop in inactivity for quite some time. Personally, I prefer the Caro-Kann (1. ... c6 2. ... d5), so that if I get stuck in the advance variation I get to throw my bishop outside the pawn chain first.

Paultopia -- your family must have been savagely slaughtered by a bunch of rogue Frenchmen when you were a kid. Such hatred of a Sacred Line!
1. e4 e6 1-0 Oh, if only my latest French victim (sorry SirLoseAlot!) were so lucky!

Actually, I have to admit that occasionally I lose against the french... when I try experimental lines without calculation :-)
I'm currently losing one where I tried, in the mainline advance, Qb3 following Qb6, on the theory that the open rook file after the queen trade would make up for the double-isolated pawns. Err... it isn't...
I'm also kicking around trying, one of these games, 1. e4 e6 2. f4!? on the theory that f4 is ALWAYS a good move :-)
When you have the room... shoot me a challenge and you can be the ginuea pig of that line if you'd like...
