Thank you all for a good discussion, though, I must say I´m pretty lost still. There are so many options but I think I will try the KI or the Dutch.

Would you aggree with me that the Dutch should rather be played against weaker players than stronger?

The legendary IronMan31 played the dutch with great skill, so the opening is potent against all. Personally, I'd recommend the nimzo-indian.

Well, if you play the Dutch Defense then you must know how to defend against the Staunton Gambit variation. Here's the problem as I see it... I could play anything against a weaker opponent OTB.. BUT playing this kind of chess means that a 1200 player could actually take time to look the line up and play all the correct BOOK MOVES! 😳

So that means that the sharp, tactical opening lines are no good here! They only work against people too lazy to look up the openings.

I play c5 vs d4. Seems to work pretty well actually, don't usually get beat early although it can get tricky. I have quite a bit of experience with it so it works well. Sometimes get a piece to a pawn advantage out of it as well.

Statistically speaking, you can't do better than the Nimzo-Indian as black. If you find yourself drawing against weaker players, it's due to you, not the opening.

I usually play the solid-semi-slav or sort of like the Nimzo-Indian without Bb4.

I inveted a line for this...(specifically QG..)

d4 ..d6
c4 ..c6
e4 ..e5

Both the Queen exchange and the declined exchange favour black....

Declined...
Game 1385403

Accepted...
Game 1335152

My play in the middle game could have been better but you get the idea...

Oh yeh, these are both in progress so no comments please 😞

What about other d4 openings, well...

d4 ..d6
e4 ..Nf3
Nc6 ..Nd7
Nf3 ..e5

This is the Lion defense, and it can be played against e4 the other way around...

e4 ..d6
d4 ..Nf6
Nc3 ..Nd7
Nf3 ..e5

Same position!!! Here's a couple of examples from my not so brilliant games...

e4..
Game 1251736
Game 1044918 (Opponent played badly..)

d4..
Game 697232
Game 1295721
Game 939962 (i lost on time when i went on holiday but would have won!)

Or even something wierd like 1.b4...

Game 669456 (lost on time but the position is good!)

Anyway, basically what i'm saying is 1..d6 is an answer to pretty much anything white throws at you. You can stear the game into similar positions, that, assuming you take the time to learn this properly, you'll always have the advantage of firmiliarity!!! If you want any more info, send me a PM and i'll point you to some better examples 😉

The only thing is that you have to be prepared to defend the Pirc if your opponent goes for 1. d4 d6 2. e4. One option after 1. d4 is e6. After 1. d4 e6 2. e4 you have the French defence, and if 2. c4 you can play the Dutch defence with 2. ... f5, with the bonus that you don't have to learn the various gambit lines against it.
