Philidor's Legacy...well the finish is much the same as the composition that goes by that name...

Heh, heh... I know that. But i've seen it called something else before. I thought it was the "kostics trap" but I looked that up and found it's something totally different.

Classic! I believe that is vintage Capablanca a la Morphy, correct? 🙂

François-André Danican, AKA Philidor (France, died in 1795), player and musician, dominated chess for +/- 50 years. His book, 'Analyse du Jeu des Échecs' (1749), "created a new theoretical school" (Alekhine). He played thousands and thousands of games, but only few ones remained. There´s no one game of Philidor playing the 'Philidor Defense' (1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6)! The Philidor´s Legacy is himself. Use the Philidor´s Legacy is an honor! For example:

Capablanca-Mattison, Carlsbad, 1929:

1R1R2K1-5PPP-PQ2P3-2P2B2-4ppN1-npq5-p5pp-r1b2rk1

Black resigns. Why? Because 1. c5+ Kh8 2. Nf7+ Kg8 (if ...Rxf7 3. Rd8+ and mates) 3. Nh6+ Kh8 4. Qg8+! Rxg8 5. Nf7#.

Unzicker-Sarapu, Siegen, 1970:

R1BK1R2-PPP3PP-8-2B5-3Q4-1q1Nn3-pp3ppp-r1br2k1

Sarapu is in good posicion, isn´t it? NO! 1. Bf4! Nxf4 2. Qxf7+ Kh8 3. Qg8+ Rxg8 4. Nf7#.

It´s a dream use the Philidor´s Legacy in a real game. Congratulations, onyx2006!

BTW... how do I create boards?

Is there an alternative winning line if black didn't play 1....Nxf4? ?

That seemed to be a terrible move to me even if it didn't lead to a forced mate.

Position after 1. Bf4.

Certainly, 1 ... Nxf4 is an error, but Unzicker analyzed many moves before this position. This game was selected by Leonard Barden in the book 'Play better chess', 1980, Octopus Books Ltd, England.
If 1 ... Qxb2 2. Be5!
