I just won what must have been my best game or RHP, if not my best victory ever! 😏 Which inspired me to write something that I've been thinking about for a while now.
Since I've joined the RHP, and practicing a lot, I've found that I've began to develop what seems like a genuine playing style. If I could have been said to have a playing style before joining RHP, it would have probably been a kind of a cautious counter-attacker. Though mostly I just tried not to blunder.🙂 Now I'm finding myself initiating increasingly agressive attacks, especially when playing white.
The curious thing I've also found is that it seems that there are some players that seem to be vunerable to my playing style, while others players of equal strength simply crush me like a bug.
As a result, I've found some 1500+ players more difficult to to play against than some 1700+ players. Also some strong players beat me quite comfortably (Sealion for example), while others I can play on equal footing with, or even have good chances at beating.
Is there, in addition to playing strenght, at the club player level, also a kind of
ock, paper, scissors going on with playing styles? And if so, which one are you? 🙄

What a wonderful topic! The Only Chess forum is full of interesting stuff these days.
I bet you're right about the Rock, Paper, Scissors thing.
I like to be under a heavy attack which I just barely repulse, coming out with a couple slight advantages which are just enough to win the endgame. That's the most exciting win for me. I like wild attacks too, but to me they're not quite as satisfying. I tend to open fairly quietly and hope my opponent goes overly aggressive. Of course, if he or she chooses just the right level of aggression, making good use of the center I've neglected and the development edge I've given them, well then I'm in trouble 🙂
Actually,a friend of mine against whom I've played quite a few over the board games a few months ago described my style very similarly as you describe your style! I haven't played him since my style change, so he might be in for a surprice... 🙂
I think what's mostly responsible for the increase in aggression is the opening I've been immersing myself in - the Bird opening. It seems to be an attacking player's opening, as it often leads to positions screaming out for attack. Studyng the Bird opening has been like learning how to go straight for your opponent's chessic jugular. 😀
I don't mind the change though - I quite enjoy an attacking combination coming together. And I do play a bit more like my "old self" as black - I quite enjoy playing Caro-Kann, and that's not a very aggressive opening.

Though you were not so far from my jugular either... I just got to yours first! Had I not found that mate, you would have had quite a strong counter-attack going. Exiting game anyway.
BTW, I've got a few games nearing their end, and I think I'll be ready for the mini-duel we were talking about earlier by the end of next week. Looking forward to it 🙂.

All right, I'll sharpen my knives and I'll go into meditation mode to prepare myself for a fierce fight ....... 😀
