Everyone handles it different.I suggest you just do as you see fit.
Personally I resign when I think it's technically lost and I see no more traps to set.But it very much depends on the game itself,my opponent and the mood I'm in.
I disagree, if it's a hopeless state then ur wasting your opponents time if U r just waiting 4 your opponent 2 make a mistake. Chances r high if u r already been thrashed that they r not going 2 make stupid errors.
In a tournament with real players I will continue a bit longer as there is always the chance that time will run out, mistakes made ect. But correspondence NO.
But then I'm biased, I like playing fast. Don't waste my time & I'll not waste yours.

I would be embarassed to be checkmated. I would also feel rude to play on in a truly hopeless position. On the other hand, I don't mind if an opponent plays on in a lost game. I figure they must have some reason for it . . .

A good time to resign is when you do "The Phlabibit Gambit". This is where you trade a Rook for nothing in an even game. Ask RC about that one!
I know when I am beat, and don't drag games out unless I have some small hope.

I have looked at or studied games played by the top players on this site. Sometimes they resign or call a draw with half the field still in play. I always slog it out till the last man standing. Cut my arms off & I'll bite you to death sorta thing. What gives?
My rule with losing positions on RHP tends to be to resign if it's completely obvious how for my opponent to win. Otherwise I tend to keep playing in the hope that my opponent will make a mistake.
I think it personally depends on ranking and stupid mistakes. If you are down and out, and playing somebody that plays fast, why wouldn't you fight until you are checkmated? I have played a few games where somebody has a plan in mind, and I'm obviously beat, and are so focuses on getting that pawn pushed into a queen, that they forget that I need to be able to move without being in check. If I'm playing somebody with a rating of 1200 or above, i tend to resign when the game is hopeless, but if I'm playing somebody without that experience, why not fight until the end? The only other way i won't resign is if I'm playing somebody that offers draw after draw in a game when you have either just started or obviously have a stronger position!
