As Black :
1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 d6
3.d4 xd4
4.Bc4 h6
5.c3 xc3
6.Nxc3 Nc6
7.Qb3 Qe7
8.0-0 Bg4
9.Nd5

Seems to me that what ever black plays after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 hes in trouble. where did I go wrong?

maybe 7... Nd8

I think black has better defences than (2...d6) The Philidor's Defence.

4....,h6? That's were you went wrong. You're not in a position to be wasting time like that.Your pieces must come into play asap.
I believe 4...,Nc6 is considered best.

I do believe I read somewhere that there are many better defenses than philidor's defense. I recall reading it in one of Seirawan's books and in Igo Khmelnitsky's Chess Exam book

The Philidor isn't grand but there's not too much wrong with it either.Just that it's a bit passive and doesn't promise Black much on the higher levels.I think it'll do for us mere mortals though.Besides, you can solve the passiveness by playing the kingside fianchetto lines, they're lively enough.
As for book opinions, there's a fairly recent book on it,something along the lines of "winning with the philidor".Would reading that book instead of the ones advocating against it make the opening any different?

Philidor's defence is a very, very difficult opening for Black. However if he does spend the time learning the defences to White's obvious attacks, he can can end up with an equal position.

4...,Nc6
could lead to
5.c3 xc3
6.Nxg3 Bg4
7.Qb3 Qe7
8.Ng5 Nh6?
9.Nd5

Yes,except 6....,Bg4 is terrible.Black has to deal with his weakest spot,f7.All Bg4 acomplishes is create a 2nd weak spot,b7.White can exploit these weaknesses by 7.Qb3.
Just play 6...,Nf6 and you should be fine.
Also,I'm not sure I would've taken that pawn on c3.Allthough I don't think it's bad but it does seem to give white a bit more than he should be getting.
