from Dvoretsky's Tactical Play:
I liked this one a lot because it's a position where Petrosian resigned in a blitz game, as WHITE!
So if you were ever looking for a chance to prove you're a better blitz player than Petrosian, here it is. you probably would have 5~10 seconds here. let's make it 20 for you to get familiar with the position.
it took me around 20 minutes instead of 20 seconds, I guess Petrosian is the better player after all. 🙁

nope, that's the point. White to move. Petrosian resigned instead of finding the right move as white here.
I don't see how the proposed move can be the winning one. I see it's an zwischenzug to hinder the Qg3#, but I cannot see the line to a win.

So after 1. Be5 Qxe5 2. Ra8+ Black can play
2. ... Kg7, after which 3. Qa1 swaps the queens off
2. ... Kf7, after which 3. Nxf4 Qxf4 4. Rf1 again gets the queens off
2. ... Rf8, this is the line I'm least sure of. It looks like 3. Rxf8 Kxf8 4. Rf1+ Kg8 5.Rf4 might stop Black's attack, but it's a difficult position to analyse properly without a proper board. Does White have anything better than that?

And even if black queen *is* pinned, what will pin it?

Originally posted by FabianFnasFat Lady's lines are correct. to be honest, I had missed the 2...Rf8 defense while I had solved the problem, I only saw it when I was entering the moves in fritz to check out my solution, but it turned out to be good for white too.

the thing is, black has already sacrificed so much material to carry out the attack that white can give back pretty much anything he wants, and if he can survive the mate threat, he will still be in a better position.
I found the position nice for several reasons:
1)for a long time I didn't even look at the positions and potential moves of the rook and queen. you need to look at the whole board.
2)it's like two soldiers have gone out of ammo and started throwing at each other whatever they have in possession.

Ok, more opportunity for embarrassment:
Ra8+ .. Kxg7
Qa1+ .. Nf6
Nxf6 .. Rxf6
Rf1
Not sure if this wins but it breaks up the mate on h2 and puts white on the offensive.
