Alekhine did manage to defeat Capablanca and then wisely refused to give him a rematch despite the fact that one had been agreed on before the first match. He then refused to play in any tournment that Capablanca was playing in from then on.
There were personal problems between those two players. Alekhine felt insulted by Capablanca. This is not the first time a insult taken cost a player a tiltle chance. Lasker was insulted by Tarrasch and did not grant him a title match for many years. When he did play for the title he was older and a weaker player.
