yes, but after 4. d7, black has 4. ..., Nxe1 5. d8=Q, Kh7 and the pawn at b column is unstoppable, or at the least tradeable by the alone white Queen...

I used to play on there, but I found th short time limit frustrating.
As I got better at spotting combinations, my rating got worse.

At first, I'd see a move and play it cos it looked right.
Later I'd see a move, see a possible counter, then see a way to make the combination work. By the time I'd done that I'd run out of time.

At the moment, I'm enjoying Chess Tempo (http://chesstempo.com), which is a similar thing, except you can think all you like.

Phil.

True. Black is winning. I scanned the position too fast.

Hi, it surely looks familiar, the lower rating is compensated by the success rate... 😉

hmm, didn't really realize it before, but looking at your IDs I wonder if they were issued in sequence, just like here. which would make my account the 516th, and your main account the 7448th. sounds about right? although the difference between your two IDs seems quite big so maybe not...

Are the problems timed on CTS? If so, how much time do you get per problem and what happens if you run out of time (is the solution revealed straight away)?

How useful do people find it in improving their tactics?

Try playing as a guest before registering an account there. You can get the feel as a guest before you are ready for the real thing.

6 seconds to see the position until it's your move. 3 seconds more to score the full points. after that the remaining time depends on the relative rating difference of your and the problem's rating. assuming you're equally rated with the problem, you get 6s + 3s + 7s = 16s to get exactly zero points. if you use more time, you get minus points, the amount of which converges to 'failed' score in infinity. which simply means you always score more by getting the problem right no matter how long you take, than you score by failing it.

you see the correct solution afterwards, but you can also try it again unrated first. also, at the end of your session you can also review all your problems, and try again the ones you failed, unrated of course. most long time users use the session history to gather data from every session, usually the success rate. as the profile's success rate is quite irrelevant after a few thousand problems. my profile success rate for example is 80.2%, but in reality I've done 95%+ the last 30000 problems or so. there's a BIG difference, 80% is 1/5 wrong, 95% is 1/20 wrong. heinzkat's 99.5% is 1/200 wrong. that's 5 failed in his 1000 tries.

how useful? well, I begun CTS when I started chess 4 years ago. it's been probably 95% of my training.
