Although Kasparov's highest rating was 2851 and Fischers was 2780, it is
ifficult to compare, Kasparov had modern databases, etc. and computers and Fischer didn't

Do not forget that Kasparov had a team of GMs to help him.

Botvinnik beat Capablanca when he was about 14 years of age. Maybe Botvinnik is better then Capablanca.

What was somebody saying about the quality of threads on this board at the moment 😞

good point. but also, there is no telling how good fischer would have been with the help kasparov had, and capablanca was by common consent the most talented player ever, having never read a chess book, so would he have been better from computers, or was his skill in using purely his own talent and not rules and concepts? but the biggest question of all is, am i going anywhere with this?

It's a popular misconception that Capa never studied openings or read a chessbook.
He did. He enjoyed discussing theoretical novelties in openings as much as any GRANDMASTER, and was familiar with all opening lines.
But he didn't make his life revolve around chess, he liked being a playboy and living the good life, that much is true. Compared to Alekhine, he did indeed ignore studying chess.
But Alekhine was nuts.

AND WHY IS THE SCRIPT GOING WAAAAAAAAY OFF TO TEH RIGHT?
