Before I start, I'm not a racist or anti-American, never have been, never will be. But I would just like to offer a topic for lively debate.
This is the fact that American players will never on the whole rank
higher than their British counterparts. The game is renowned to be
an English game, invented by an Englishman and relating to British folklore. It is also a good point to note that most of the top worlds scientists are British, why is this? because they think logically like
top chess players. Chess is a game that alikens itself to the mathmetician, for it is indeed a game that makes a human being think by making calculations as to what is the best thing to be done, via cost benefit analysis and weighing up the chances of taking risks and getting away with it.

That is ridiculous! The fact that the game was invented by the Brits has nothing to do with who is good at playing it, and the fact that the Brits invented is prolly not completely true. Also, specifying a race of people, not even a race I should say, people who are classified as British by their place of birth and accent (although I do wish I talked like you guys!) that are better at chess than others is kinda stupid. No good British players were around when Bobby Fischer (yes, an American) reigned supreme over the chess world. It was a bunch of Russians, Fischer, and Larsen, and some other guys. I'm not saying there wasn't any, just not then! British players like Short, Adams, and the likes haven't been around for that long, although nowadays, it is quite difficult to find some American GM's. Shabalov, Dzindihashvilli(there is no way that is spelled correctly), and myself are the only ones I can think of right now! 😀

The game was invented in Persia, or India, hundreds of years ago. I'm afraid the Brits are latecomers to the field.

Chess has always been played... ever since somone took their checker-board and stacked little statues on top.

Sure the rules have changed... Used to be able to set the board up any way you like... Queen moves 4 squares at a time... Who invented castling!?

Will an American be the best at chess? Sure, some day... cuz no mater what some people think... Chess will never die.

P-

Edit! Or did someone put checkers on a chess board because chess was too hard?

LOL, this must be a wind-up. Not even the most staunch patriot can think chess was invented by an Englishmen (the oldest chess set found in the British isles was on a scottish island and probably norse).
Also, because the English invented cricket, we are surely the best at that then? What about football, tennis? Ho hum. (I won't mention rugby 😀)

Im English never read so much tripe about we invented the game or we are better than them its an individual game and the better player wins overall no matter were you are from ie Capablanca Morphy . However i do like a good wind up.

britain was the centre of the universe with their world rule stuff for a long time.
the brits often have a semipsychotic attitude to their place in the world now in relation to that. it is often masked as humor.
they are now just a small island off some continent somewhere unimportant.
you u.s.a. residents take note, your offspring will eventually suffer this fate.

You are out of date, my friend. For many years we have been taught to hate ourselves and our history. Since schooldays, the British are evil, we were responsible for everything bad in the world. When we are not being bad we are being useless and innefectual. Now we are deeply ashamed. Why are foreigners so much better at everything than ourselves. I wish we were more like them.

Just for your information, in an ethnic of Indonesia, called Batak Karo, there is a traditional game very similar to chess, called Batak Chess. The difference is everything are doubled. There are 16 x 16 square, 32 pieces of chess for each players which have the same character of moving as the regular chess.

This may considered that chess is universal, though some countries indeed have tradition to produce highly rank players. Our best all time chess player is Utut Adianto, GM. But these days there aren't anyone to compete with him in our country. Maybe it's because there wasn't good future for chess players in our country.

And so, maybe the culture of a country has influent in producing genius in chess.

Once again, chess is universal, and it depends how each players develop their skill, undersstanding and mastering of the chess.

With the spirit of chesss,
ANton
