I believe the point trying to be made is that cheating at chess is hard work for little gain. For each one of those heinous things you listed, there can be a percieved "gain" for less "work." But what is the gain here? As was said, there is no prize. Even a boost in pride makes no sense as few if any know who you really are anyways.
It's a mystery to me, as well.
Probably because there's a thrill in being able to get away with something you're not supposed to be doing. Also, there would be a certain kind of skill involved in cheating on here and not getting caught (just copying engine moves would get you caught quickly, so you'd have to be a bit more clever than that).
Every time there's a well-publicized murder, the police have to sift through dozens of confessors looking for the right one. Why do they do it?
I believe there's a charisma that goes with a high rating. People actually believe what you're saying about chess (or anything else) if you have a high rating. I've actually seen people in the forums critique comments by saying, in effect, "you're rating is only 1200, what do you know?" So I guess we're all a part of it.
Originally posted by duecerUnfortunately some people think it's ok. Many video games have built in cheat codes that are publicized in magazines and on-line to help get through tough spots. This teaches them it's Ok to cheat if they cant beat the game by themselves or are too lazy to put the time in. In CC some get frustrated in a bad position and are tempted to just do it once. Next thing you know their rating goes up and they have to rely on the cheat more and more until suddenly they are rated significantly higher then actual and have to run the cheats constantly. This is when they get caught. Shame we can't do anything to them like format their drive when they're found out.
We know that cheaters exist, and are summarily banned from the sight, but wht do they cheat to begin with? It seams to me that the fun of chess is pitting your skill against an opponent. Cheating seems more like work, and ultimately no fun at all.
I do not understand why ppl cheat with nothing to gain. Saying that why do some player cheat and is very open about it but they don't see it as cheating. Some players profile says "I use a opening database to play the openings but nothing else." This is cheating in my opinon and maybe I am wrong but I know I do not play the 1st 20 moves of any my games like a GM and prob. will not for sometime. Honest ppl who think the whole game out for themsleves are being punished and losing point that they may not have lost in a fair face to face match. Instead they got Kasparov for the first 12 moves and is forced to try and recover from playing like themself. What do you guys think?
