Why does FICS(free internet chess server) look like the old dos program from the 1980's?
don't they have anything better?
also....registering is impossible with regular email accounts??
why isn't it like other sites where i can see more than just code?
i liked the movie "The matrix"..but come on...
I'm sure i was in the wrong spot and hope someone will tell me where to go in FICS

Originally posted by chessisvanityit doesn't, it looks like a unix. probably because the original nerds who built ICC (of which FICS is a free off-shoot) were unix nerds (I'm guessing).

That's because that's how the site actually looks, as does ICC by the way (beneath its slicker interface), and always has going back to 1995 when I believe both were founded. Both FICS and ICC were based on the original ICS site and after a disagreement broke out between the founders about whether or not it should go commercial, one of them departed and took the ICS code with him and founded ICC.
The others eventually cobbled together the original ICS server code and re-opened the free site under the new name FICS with the founding principal that it would always remain free. Anyway there's a lot of different interfaces you can use to play there with varying degrees of server command knowledge required. Although you don't need to know that many to just play games there, and there's help channel there to help you along.
Originally posted by scandiumOf course most don't. But since I like to play standard games there if that is 10% this is already enough frustrating. When you are playing rated OTB game, you don't have opportunity to "disconnect" and refuse to move once and for all.
Some people do, most people don't. You're tarring a very large group of people with the wrong brush in either case.
