It was inspiring to see that one of the lowest rated players in the open class with a 1937 rating beat IM Bryan Smith(2528) in the first round.

Last night, everyone was crowded around Nakamura's game- it was fascinating, and when I saw it, it looked like Nakamura had a mating attack, but I guess not because the game was still going on sometime later. I'm currently 3/7 and trying to go for a plus score!

Just got home last night... I got 7/9 in U1600 ... my friend tied for first place in the U1600 section... another friend scored 7/9 in the U1800. Another friend went 5/9 in U2000 despite having a 1700s rating.

The first four went quite pleasantly indeed, although the second one made me a bit nervy.

The fourth game a 'gift win', and the only one, Be2 najdorf, Black played b5? (although espoused by Petrosian I think) then Bf3, Bb7?? (better e5 followed by g6 I think) then e5 won a piece, I think my opponent was still sleeping.

Then I equalised easily against Smith-Morra in the fifth game, I had an extra pawn, an isolani on d5, but it was well blockaded, and the queens and dark sqrd bishops off (as well as a pair of knights) , how to control d4? I could not find a way to simplify to keep the heavy pieces on with advantage, recalling Game 4967958; I missed the winning plan, to put my queenside pawns on dark sqres until it was already drawn, so the lsqred B which I had vs N endgame was drawn after my opponent played b4.

After my draw, we – my opponent and I – talked about how to sac bishops to a science according to the Art of Attack, so I thought great, I will sac a bishop in my next game! Which I did. Unfortunately at the climax I blundered a knight and lost, my only gross blunder – I recommend double checking moves, or the motifs at least, especially at critical points. I do not recommend playing in an impetuous style at a major tournament – it brings worse results.

Then I won, obtained a dominating position, mostly squandered it with two inaccuracies, and then got it back again and converted easily although this took some time. Next game, I obtained a draw against the Scandinavian, I had two chances to win a pawn, but these were very counterintuitive, I pressed very hard but my opponent defended exceedingly well in some time trouble, so this draw was ok. And I won again easily in the big game with Black to finish with 7 points.

My preparation for my black repetoire was most excellent for four of five Black games; this helped a lot, going 4.5/5 with Black, I played the KID 3 times, I only messed up in the e5 exchange KID not playing c6 at the appropriate time, but my opponent messed up and I got initiative anyway. All my games were very much decided in 40 moves, and I had great initiative in every game by move 15, this was pleasant, and time pressure not a factor in most games and did not affect move quality. And most of my games finished in 4 hours or less, only one went longer.

My goal before the tourney was 7.5/9 so I almost reached it, but my opponents were tenacious, and it was good chess, better than I expected. My opponents were friendly also, on the whole, and none were rude. A tremendous learning experience and it helped discipline my thinking.

The word on the street is that the infamous scam artist Ed Trice was selling copies of his book "My 61 Memorable Games" at the World Open at $200 a copy. Can anyone who was there confirm this?

See this thread for why I think Ed Trice is a lying piece of filth:

And this page for the low down on "My 61 Memorable Games":

I choked big time, I'm so disappointed. Had 4.5 pts after first 5 games (3 games as black) then only managed 1 more point (2 draws!) to finish with 5.5 and out of the money in the under 1800. The worst part is that I scored better with Black +3-0=2 and only +1-2=1 with the White pieces, uncharacteristic of me. Had at least += positions in both losses as white and I guess I was too complacent and careless and ended up losing 2 critical points down the stretch.

But overall a good experience, first World Open for me, but probably not the last, though not in the under 1800 anymore.

Same with me- this is also my first world open, and I had 3/5 after the first 5 rounds, and one of those losses was a blunder from a winning position against one of the top seeds. However, I only scored .5/4 in the next 4 games, and the .5 was a quick draw in the last round against an opponent rated 100 points lower than me. I didn't win a single game with white- .5/4 with white, 3/5 with black. I dropped about 30 rating points
