This is an urban legend that gets passed around, people should know better. It's from a chess site:
"Capablanca refused to study chess and he never read chess books or studied chess openings. Becoming the World Champion despite this is evidence that he was possibly one of the greatest natural chess players that ever lived."
Capablanca studied chess voraciously from a very early age. How does this drek get started?

Alekhine owned the shirt on his back and little else, he died penniless in a rented flat in ....(Portugal? Spain? Somewhere?)
Who's got the story?

people love stories. the more improbable the win, the greater the emotional release when the protagonist finally overcomes the obstacles on his way to victory. it's the essence of drama.

I agree and I find it deplorable, but isn't that the way of the world now? To call black white? To take the facts and distort them so that the average person thinks their government is serving their needs?

For instance, the
* No Child Left Behind act
which takes money away from poor schools and gives it as an incentive to rich people sending their kids to college.

* The prescription drug program for seniors
which takes taxpayer money to allow pharmaceuticals to charge exuberant prices for drugs.

* The Patriot Act
which is actually designed to take away American citizens rights under the Constitution!

and last but not least,
*The War on Terror

We live in a time when disinformation is used to control the masses... Turn on your TV set to watch the News and what do you see? NOTHING about the movement to impeach vice president Cheney. Nothing about the movement against Bush... You see weeks and weeks of crap about the celebrities. What they are doing... who's screwing who.
The people in charge of your government want you to spend your time looking at this kind of junk. They don't want you thinking about what they are doing to you. They control the way the news is presented to you and promote sports and other tribula to keep you away from thinking about the truth.

Edit: Sorry, this is the chess thread and I should only post about chess, but I had to let out my feelings about how we live in a world of disinformation - which relates to the subject.

Yep, wrong forum for an anti-government screed.

For the official story on Alekhine's death:
http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/alekhine3.html

For the most truthfull chess history:
http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/index.html

Winter takes great care in finding evidence for any claims he makes. Not easy when everyone takes such pleasure in dramatising and even making up fictive stories about the great, and less great, chessplayers.
For correct historical chess facts Winter is your best bet.

yeah i know 1.e4 has reportedly been refuted as being mickey mouse, but the players at my level don't know how to refute it so who cares what makes more sense?
