Why do you say Alekhine was one of the worst behaved? He is my favourite player, so make sure you check your facts before posting!
Alekhine was twice the player that Capablanca was. In my opinion, Capablanca is the most overrated player of all time.
Worst behaved != worst player.
Originally posted by SwissGambitI know what you meant, but I do not think Alekhine was particularly badly behaved. He may well have written the anti-semitic articles during the second world war (he denied it afterwards and it still isn't clear what the truth is). This was a man married to a jew and living in an occupied country, it would have been very difficult for him to refuse to do what the authorities asked without dire consqeuences for him and his wife.

No votes for Ivanchuck? Not consistent, but still...
A guy called Jeff Sonas has an interesting site, tracking ratings over the history of modern chess. Some players who were number 1 for a while, without ever getting all the way: Reshevsky (even Fischer thought he was number one in the mid 50's), Fine, Najdorf.
How about best writer on chess? My vote for Purdy!

Well this turned out well.
When I logged off last night it looked like it was going to turn
into a traditional RHP slagging match for and against Alekhine.
Expected to see the thread pulled when I logged in at work.
Nobody mentioned Tarrasch. Even I forgot him - but we were only
allowed one so sticking with Keres.
But could easily be Rubinstein, Bronstein, Korchnoi or a host of others.
Me thinks Fat Lady played chess last night, lost, got drunk and came
on here....always a mistake.
(not looked at his site games yet - wonder if he made any moves?)
I've played 1625 moves on this site - 1 move was played when
I was drunk. It lost a piece. 14...Rad8 Game 5050497.
It's from a set piece Latvian.
Game should have been a draw but the old two move trick came
to my resuce and I won a piece 5 moves later.
The lad timed out and looks he has left the site.
See what one drunk move can do?

Why is it that this topic was titled worst world CHAMPION and yet more then half the posts are players never to have won the world championship.
anyhow, i would like to mention, sultan amir khan, who was in fact not a sultan, but a servant of a maharajah. when the chess greats came to see him, they were ushered into the sultans presence and entertained, as is the custom of the east, the waiter who brought the drinks was in fact the chess prodigy, not the boring old maharajah. he came from a small village in Pakistan (India at the time), had to get accustomed to the European game, as his native game the pawns were only allowed to move one square at a time, he was improving all the time, even winning against the great Capablanca, yet he was summoned back to his native village and died in total obscurity! who knows what this genius may have achieved given the opportunity!
