I just finished John Nunn's "Learn Chess Tactics" and "Understanding Chess Move By Move", and I can't give a higher recommendation. They're both well-written, informative and entertaining. Fantastic! I also thoroughly enjoyed Jeremy Silman's "The Amateur's Mind" and "Reassess Your Chess Workbook".
