It's not the most original attack, and possibly not sound, but I was pretty pleased with my win in Game 2141758 so thought I'd post it here for the forum . . . Position after white's 30th move:

I seriously think that is the furthest into a game without a taken piece I have ever seen.

I've reached 19 without a piece taken before in a 45/0 game. I needed a win (team match the other games had all finished and we were losing 1.5-0.5) but I slipped into a perpetual in massive mutual time trouble (less than a minute for me and 30 seconds for him). Afterwards I let Fritz loose on my game and it just kind of cocked its head at me and whined (read: was useless in such a closed position).

Cool. A related fact is the remarkable loss of tempi by each site. Move 23:

White could reach this set-up in 17 moves, black in 13. So whereas white has only lost six tempi, black has lost ten.

Thanks Smaug.

It would be interesting to know what the record is. I imagine some very closed Englishes could get much further. There are some theoretical lines that reach move 20 or so without a piece being taken and I imagine it's not that uncommon in the KID, closed Spanish, perhaps a few others.

Eg, a position known to theory in the compelling Zaitzev: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O 9. h3 Bb7 10. d4 Re8 11. Nbd2 Bf8 12. a4 h6 13. Bc2 exd4 14. cxd4 Nb4 15. Bb1 c5 16. d5 Nd7 17. Ra3 f5 18. Nh2 Nf6 19. Rg3 Kh8.

Woah. Cool.

Btw, if anyone's curious, here is a game featuring a similar sacrifice to the one I played.

Boris Gelfand - Boris Kantsler, Israel 2001.

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 O-O 6. Be2 e5 7. O-O Nc6 8. d5 Ne7 9. Ne1 Ne8 10. Be3 f5 11. f3 f4 12. Bf2 h5 13. c5 g5 14. a4 Ng6 15. a5 Rf7 16. cxd6 Nxd6 17. Nd3 Bf6 18. Nc5 Nf8 19. Nb5 Rg7 20. a6 bxa6 21. Nxa6 g4 22. Nxa7 g3 23. Bc5

23. ... Bh3 24. gxh3 Qd7 25. Bd3 Qxh3 26. Qe2 Ng6 27. Qg2 Qd7 28. Nxc7 Nh4 29. Qe2 Qh3 30. Ne6 Ng2 31. Rfc1 Qxh2+ 32. Kf1 Qh1+ 33. Bg1 Nh4 34. Nxg7 Nxf3 0-1

Here is another similar sacrifice. One of my favorite games:

Ljubomir Ftacnik vs Ognjen Cvitan

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1046655

Thought it would make a nice puzzle. Black to move.

Woah, that one is a real corker. I'd not seen the game before; thanks for posting it.

What's hilarious is that when I saw that first diagram, having not looked at this game, I was like, "Hmmm, this is a classical KID." I was so wrong. 😀

I think black would really have to work to gain that much king side space in a KID.

Yeah, it's the Spanish-Hungarian-Italian-Transposition Indian!

Which abbreviates as - oh.

It's not really that tough in a classical KID. For example, this is a funny game that I recall in the Classical with Be3, which is Viktor Korchnois favorite line:

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5.Nf3 O-O 6. Be2 e5 7. O-O Nc6 8. d5 Ne7 9. Ne1 Nd7 10. Be3 f5 11. f3 f4 12. Bf2 g5 13. a4 a5 14. Nd3 b6 15. b4 axb4 16. Nb5 Nf6 17. Be1 g4 18. Bxb4 g3 19. h3 Bxh3 20. gxh3 Qd7 21. Kg2 Ng6 22. Rh1 Nh4+ 23. Kg1 Nxe4 24. fxe4 f3 When white is blown off the board. The g5-g4-g3 is almost the only plan for black in this positions. 😀
