1. Nb3+ e5
2. Kf6 (leaving the queen hanging but blocking the escape route)...exd3

Probably I'm wrong, but what about 2 Bf3, doesn't that work too?

Okay let me clarify:
1.Nb3 e4 2.Bf3 Rc7+ and there's no mate on the third move.

Any chance this idea can be made to work without the flight-taking key?

Can some one please explain this notation to me. Just when I think that I understand it, something like this comes along. How can Knight to b3 cause check on the first move? I just don't see it.

Oops. Nb3 doesn't actually check the black king. I must have nocturanly emissed all over this board. Sorry everyone, I swear to God I'm clean. It's a simple 1. Nb3, no check.

Isn't this position illegal?

The white king is under check, but the pawn can't be black's last move...

The king is not under check. The black pawns move downwards...
