my riddle, is tolkien derived and i want to see if anyone else has read the book, guess away!!

this thing all things things devours:
birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
gnaws iron, bites steel;
grinds hard stones to meal;
slays kings, ruins town,
and beats the high mountains down, what am i?
