    Hard one. Dunno.

Not the only ones of which there are two - there are more Lizzies.
Neither M or A died in office, married in office, had a child in or after office - and before is hardly unique.
Some were married before they married the prez, but not all. Some were Second Lady as well, but not all. It's nothing to do with centuries, or second names.

Martha Washington, Abigail Adams and Elizabeth Monroe married their presidents before 1790, and are the only First Ladies to do so - Martha Jefferson was his daughter and Dolley Madison married him in 1794. But I don't think that's a serious connection. It would've been had Elizabeth Monroe been old enough to marry before 1776.

They're the only three who married their presidents before the USA officially (!) had a president, that is, before Washington's inauguration in 1789. Is that it?

The only ones whose husbands died on July 4th?

I haven't checked all later presidents, but Monroe died on that date, and Jefferson and Adams famously on the same day. If they're the only ones, interesting. It's not statistically meaningful that no other president did - there are only 40-ish presidents for 366 death dates - but three among the first few? That suggests the emotional nature of the day, closer and more personal for them, who had been involved themselves, may have played a part.

Yes that’s the connection I have in mind.

Maybe after 48 hours we open the field to anyone who has one in mind? That would make this turn open.

I'm here, having an Easter weekend off...

Anyway, I'll use the one I jumped the gun on earlier in the thread:

what connects Karl Benz, Gustav Krupp and... Pippin the Short?

Yes, and all three of them formidable Berthas. Bertha Krupp ran the company (and had the gun named after her); Bertha Broadfoot was a great support for her son, Charlemagne; but Bertha Benz' is the best story of the three.
