    Find a position with 8 pieces or less, where no king is in check, it is not given who moved last, but it is still possible to conclude what was the exact position before the last ply and also what was the exact position before the last 2 plies.

    In other words, you want a sound "Last 2 single moves?" problem.

    This has the same cook as my 7-unit attempt. It's possible that Black moved ...Kd8-c8 last, preceeded by Ka8-a7 and ...Rc8xb8+.

    Ugh. I guess I didn't learn much from that other thread. I'll have to think more about this problem later.
