New riddle

Mr. Ooh has come up with some riddles for Mr. Ahh, which he claims are remarkably clever. Mr. Ahh is trying to figure them out, but is having a hard time with it...
Mr. Ooh: "Ok heres the first riddle: Thomas has read eighty essays, two every night; total his interesting reading this year."
Mr. Ahh: "His INTERESTING reading? Hmm... ok, usually essays are boring. So he has done no interesting reading this year."
Mr. Ooh: "No, the answer is 43."
Mr. Ahh: "43?! How do you get that???"
Mr. Ooh ignored him and went on to the next riddle.
Mr. Ooh: "Every inch goes halfway there, every liter emptys vast elemental nodes, taste which one?"
Mr. Ahh: (blank stare) "Uhhhhh... ok... the first one is inches, the second one is liters, so maybe its asking whether English or Metric is better. I like Metric because everything is in multiples of 10, so I'm going to say the second one."
Mr. Ooh: "Sorry, the answer is 21."
Mr Ahh: "What??? Are you going to explain these?"
They continued like this for some time. The answers were always some number, but Mr. Ooh never explained why. His riddles seemed to get more and more obscure as they went on. After a while, they weren't even questions anymore. Mr. Ahh was about to give up and start looking for other friends, but suddenly he had an idea. He listened intently to the next riddle.
Mr. Ooh: "Tired wolves enjoy lasting vacations everywhere, feasting on unsuspecting rodents, never interupting neighboring emus."
Mr. Ahh thought briefly, and blurted out a number. "Yes!" exclaimed Mr. Ooh. "You got it!"
