i would like to offer an alternative solution to TOMMYC
the question asks what is the next number of customers to come in.

I'm not sure my answer is what the poser intended but i feel that its a valid response.

I must say I like your hints embedded in your postings!

🙂

I would have just given the answer, with reason, but it seems the initial poster wanted everyone to suffer!

I'd never have gotten it without your hint.

The question could be made a lot harder if one asked how many customers she would have somewhere around her trillionth day, say. Still, I'm confident it would be no more than 99.

No, because you still fail to understand my point.

I like puzzles but for some reason I find this one annoying rather than clever or interesting. I think that is because I find the scenario silly (why a shop?) and the sequence daft.

For those who are still unclear about the sequence, it's here: http://tinyurl.com/pc38p

The best bit about this thread (in my opinion) was TommyC's clues.

I understand you miss the point every post, does that count?

Thanks. That almost comically-dry website is new to me btw - another item to add on to the long list of reasons that I'm glad that I'm no longer a mathematics undergraduate!

well everyone ignored my first post so here goes a more explicit attempt. 1 customer comes in at a time, no matter how many there are in a day the next number of customers to walk in is 1.

What if a couple walks in?

How do the customers know whether they should come or not? Does the woman close the shop when the correct number has been reached? What if she doesn't get enough customers one day? Will she run out of pie then?

they still walk in one at a time, hard to squeeze through the door together.

Most shops have doors which are wide enough to walk in together.
