what does proof game mean? It means that you are to find a legal game that reaches the position in 22.5 full moves. A full move is a move by both White and Black - numbered in the same way as on a chess scoresheet. The ".5" means that only White has made his 23rd move. The stipulation could also be read as

I'm not quite sure the tactics used to find out the last move, but I have a feeling it might have been g5
