That came to mind for me as well, but doesn't the Judge's statement imply the same person who is guilty will also not be punished? And why is the case strange?

Grammatically, 'her' has to mean this 'lady' no?

I'm thinking the sister killed both the husband and the lady and so the lady is a ghost...or maybe the sister is already dead. Or maybe the husband was the lady's hermaphrodite sibling and committed suicide.

yes. u got it. i no the one about the shotgun though, it makes it more confusing coz its not obvious what hes trying to do.

Sorry about not responding, I forgot that I posted the riddle. No one has guessed the correct answer, but people were very close. I'll include the answer (hidden of course) so that people won't have to keep guessing forever without knowing whether they are right or not.
