The titanic tried to veer away from an iceberg but the iceberg gouged giant holes along the side of the boat resulting in the boat sinking.

Would the titanic have been better off throwing the engines in full reverse and hit the ice berg head on?

Actually, It was a mistake on the part of the captain that caused them to hit the Iceberg. He put the engines in full reverse and turned hard away from the iceberg. Had he instead put the engines full ahead and turned hard away they probably would have cleared the berg.

And head on the ship would've been damaged but not sunk.
