He (Bob) bet the hotel owner (his brother, Maurice) that there was enough fuel in the car to drive from his house to the hotel. Now, Bob was halfway to Maurice's hotel when the car ran out of petrol. Bob could have pushed the car back home, but that is up hill, so he thought he may as well push it down hill to Maurice's place (being easier).

Anyway, he had to pay his dues to Maurice and he should be able to get some petrol from the petrol station down the road. Also, Trisha, Maurice's wife, is a great cook and she'd probably have enough on the go for Bob to beg a serving!

So, Bob ends up pushing the car to Maurices and is red faced - not just from the effort, but also as it's obvious he has lost the bet!!
