then black can't move (well, black can queen, but then it can't). so, stalemate...
Black can't move and he is in check.
I guess that would be the definition of... checkmate?

So, in conclusion, white underpromotes to a knight (1.e8N) and black moves the rook to g1(1...Rg1). White plays 2.Kh5 (to avoid Nd6 Rxg4 draw) and black has to move the rook, allowing a pawn push, and so on, until the g-pawn queens.

Edit: Oh, and I think you don't say "looks well" because you are describing something, not an action.

Ra1 is checkmate. That's what # means.

I almost got it...turns out I had the first 20 or so moves right, but I could not see the finale. Fritz could, however, once I led it down the path far enough...

For those who want to see the whole solution and idea:

1. e8=N! Black cannot take knight or rook.
1...Rg1! Now 2. Nd6? Rxg4+ and it's a draw. 2. Kh5! Re1 3. g5! Rg1 4. Kh6 Re1
5. g6 Rg1 6. Kh7 Re1 7. g7 Rg1
8. Kh8 Re1 9. g8=Q! Rg1 10. Qg7! Re1
11. Kh7 Rg1 12. Qg6! White uses his Queen as a backward-moving pawn!
12...Re1 13. Kh6 Rg1 14. Qg5 Re1
15. Kh5 Rg1 16. Qg4 Re1 17. Kh4 Rg1
18. Qg3 Re1 19. Nd6! Re4+ 20. Kh3 Rh4+
21. Kg2!
And black has no checks anymore!
