1.Qd1 (2.Qd4# ) seems to do the trick.
1...Qg5 2.Qd3#; 1...Qc3+ 2.Nxc3#; 1...Qe3 2.Rxe3#
EDIT: Nope 1...e5! Guess I need some sleep ๐Ÿ˜‰
EDIT2: Okay the only move that works against 1...e5! is 1.Qb1
So
1.Qb1! e5 2.Qb4#; 1...Qf2/Qc3+ 2.Nc3#; 1...exd 2.Bxd5#; 1...Qd3(b3) 2.cxd(cxb) #
EDIT3: Blasted smileys

Yep. I've a whole book of them. They are really old - some over a hundred years. What would be helpful if when some one solves it , by all means say so here but either leave out or PM me the solution. That way the shelf-life is increased which enables everyone to have a shot. Another shortly.

Why don't you post some interesting ones instead of White-to-play-and-mate-in-n-moves stuff? ๐Ÿ˜ด

Yes, well spotted.

Having scored 24/25 on the quiz below (and 25 if we admit an alternative spelling for one question), I am quite confident that my spelling is better than Mr Bowmann's. ๐Ÿ˜›
