And none of them have different dialects or dictionaries? All the 1.2 billion use the Queen's english?

Who cares? (even if you write it in italic).

The only people on earth still speaking the original queen's English are hillbillies in Appalachia.

The preferred spelling? There's only one person who's allowed to prefer a spelling? Clearly elopawn doesn't prefer that spelling.

I'm glad that this has sparked a debate for all the wrong reasons.

How many learned their English in America, or from Americans?

Regardless of its being the preferred spelling, advisor is an
acceptable alternative. Just like colour is an acceptable alternative
to color (or vice versa).

As such, he didn't warrant a public correction and you should
embarrassed that you corrected something as trivial as this
in a thread about puzzles.

This 'alternative' spelling is often considered erroneous.

You are often considered an obnoxious fool who makes himself look like an ass by trying to seem like you have some sort of superior British intellect when the evidence indicates you don't know what you're talking about. Your point?

You really hate to be wrong, don't you? Too bad you are.
Alternatives are NOT considered erroneous unless they are
slang. An alternative is just that: another perfectly acceptable
way of spelling something.

Your arrogance knows no bounds, I see. While you chide me for
being a 'typical American,' you misquote me. You'll note what I
wrote is:

..thus indicating my ambivalence towards alternatives, as I consider
(as do all people fluent in English) them equally legitimate spellings.

You should save a little face here by admitting that you were wrong
AND an arrogant turd for 'correcting' someone using an accepted spelling
of a word.

When rediculous becomes a valid spelling of ridiculous it's on your head. I don't believe in catering to the lowest common denominator, many alternate spellings come from people just being too lazy or stupid to spell things right.

You have this notion that language is a fixed entity. It's not. It's
in constant flux. Just a casual look at dictionaries from 50, 100,
and 250 years ago will show you that.

Alternate spellings may derive from misspellings, but once they are
codified, they become accepted. Words come into being this way, too.

If you want to pretend that there is this golden dictionary in the sky
with all the right spellings in the universe, be my guest! I think it is
the height of silliness.

Furthermore, the 'correction' Bowmann foolishly made was totally
inappropriate to the content of this forum or thread. If he wants to
be the spelling and grammar police, he should, first, be 'correct' in his
admonitions according to modern dictionaries and practice and, second
do it in a forum which such corrections are expected and solicited.

Is your poor grammar laziness or stupidity?
